Information about the SMARTEnvi Project at the EurAsia Waste Management Symposium

“The research named “Rehabilitation Methods for Open Dumps and Its Global Applications: SmartEnvi EU Project” was presented by Res. Assist. Roda Gökçe YILMAZ ÇİNÇİN at the 6th EurAsia Waste Management Symposium on October 25, 2022 in Istanbul. The presented study was listened to by researchers, students and engineers studying about solid waste at the international symposium. In this presentation, the environmental damage caused by the open dumps and different rehabilitation methods used for the rehabilitation of the open dumps were mentioned. In addition, different Case Studies prepared by the project partners, which are the intellectual outputs of the SmartENVI project, were mentioned as global applications. Case Studies of rehabilitation studies using different rehabilitation methods were listened with interest by the audience. In addition, some information about the SMARTEnvi project and the web address of the project were shared with the audience in order to provide access to the project information.



SMARTEnvi Project Team visited Kömürcüoda Landfill Plant operated by Istanbul Environment Management Industry and Trade Company Disposal Plant (ISTAC Inc.), Istanbul, Turkey (20.07.2022)

Prof. Selçuk Toprak, Prof. Banu Çetin, Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Balçık, and Oğuz Dal of Gebze Technical University (SMARTEnvi project coordinator) performed a technical visit to the Istanbul Envıronment Management Industry and Trade Company (ISTAC Inc.), which is affiliated with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The visit included Kömürcüoda Sanitary Landfill Facility which is one of the sanitary landfill facilities operated by ISTAC. SMARTEnvi project was presented to senior and field staffs of ISTAC and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality: Semih Polat (ISTAC), Erol Tezcan (ISTAC), Ferhat Erbaş (ISTAC) and Kubilay Kaya (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality). After presentation and discussions, the project team and ISTAC staffs agreed to make a collaboration for improvement of project products by sharing information. After the meeting, the sanitary landfill was visited.

Istac Inc, Istanbul Environment Management Industry and Trade Company was founded in 1994 as an affiliation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, ISTAC INC. provides services in the fields of waste and environmental management in order to hand down livable cities to future generations. In order to prevent the environmental damages caused by waste generation, which accelerates with the increase in the amount of population and individual waste, as much as possible, to protect nature by reducing the use of limited natural resources, and to reduce the waste-based greenhouse gas emissions; ISTAC INC. primarily carries out some activities such as waste management (municipal, industrial, medical, and ship generated waste transportation and management, construction and operation landfill sites), city cleaning, recycling (incineration, biomethanization, refused derived fuel etc.), R&D service and environmental laboratory (https://www.istac.istanbul/en).


SMARTEnvi Project Members had a Meeting with İzaydaş Personnel at Waste Disposal Plant, Kocaeli, Turkey (22.06.2022)

The SMARTEnvi project involves different stages and participants. Each partner including associated partners have been involving their own networks and other main stakeholders in landfill sector and municipalities by sharing information with them. By doing so, the target groups can be informed about the concept, processes and outputs of the project. The informed participants will benefit from the project but also contribute better shaping the needs of the project’s target group.

Within this concept, a visit by SMARTEnvi project coordinator, Gebze Technical University, was made to the İZAYDAŞ, which is 100% affiliated with Kocaeli Metropolitian Municipality and responsible for the management of municipal and hazardous solid waste. The Environmental Management System Officer of the company, Aysun Saraç, made a presentation about the vision and mission, policy, current technologies used in the plant and future planning of the company. After this presentation, SMARTEnvi EU project was introduced to the company manager, Muhammet Saraç and company employees. Then the sanitary landfill and waste burning plant facilities were visited.

İzaydaş has been established on May 1996 by the Metropolitan Municipality in order to process the projects within the scope of the Integrated Environment Project of İzmit. It is accepting wastes since 1977. The facility has accepted different type of waste (industrial, municipal, hazardous etc.) and consists of different disposal methods (https://www.izaydas.com.tr/defaultEn.aspx).

Partnerzy projektu SMARTEnvi odwiedzili Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Oczyszczania Sp. z o.o w Krakowie, Polska

A visit by SMARTEnvi project partners, Pamukkale University and Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, was made to the Municipal Company of Cleaning Public Limited Company, which is 100% affiliated with Krakow Municipality and responsible for the management of municipal solid waste. A presentation about the urban solid waste management plan was made by the company manager, Marek Kabacinski, and the stages from the collection of solid waste to its disposal were explained in this presentation.

Agreements between the company and the residents of the city to collect waste from houses, sites and workplaces are made on an annual basis. An average of 5 €/person is paid every month to the households. Wastes are collected separately at the source as yellow (plastic, metal), blue (paper), green (glass), brown (green waste, park and garden waste) and black (mixed waste). The collection schedule for the location and time are determined on annual basis according to the colors of these boxes. Yellow, blue and green containers are brought to the solid waste sorting facility, where appropriate pellets are made and sent to the recycling facilities. Mixed wastes are disposed by landfilling in the sanitary landfill. Energy is produced by the production of biogas from this process. Additionally, the anaerobic treatment plant project to produce biogas from kitchen waste and reduce the amount of stored waste according to the European Union Framework Directive is at the planning stage. According to this directive, although the recycling targets were 50% in 2020, around 69% of waste was recycled. In general, wastes disposed of by landfilling are below the landfilling target. Compost is produced only from green waste. This compost is certified and used in the municipality’s park and garden areas, and the rest is sold for 1€/tonne to flower growers. High volume wastes such as furniture and electronic wastes are collected from the houses upon request. Unsuitable and bulky wastes are crushed in the shredding facility and then disposed in the incineration facility, and its energy provides 10% of Krakow’s electricity needs. The incineration plant is also operated by another company, which is 100% owned by the municipality. Inspections are carried out in 8000 residences and workplaces annually to check whether the wastes are collected appropriately at the source. 60 municipal police officers are on duty for these inspections, and the waste bins are checked regularly to check if they are separated by color. At the end of the inspections, in cases where it is determined that the improper waste was disposed according to the colors, a fine of 10-100 € is imposed.

After this presentation, the municipality’s recyclable waste sorting facility was visited. Afterwards, SMARTEnvi EU project was introduced. Photos from this activity and the technical visit are below.
